I feel like I need new garden markers every spring. They are so easy to make and bring such a fresh new life to our backyard I just can't resist! I did a Main Ingredient Monday with 20 of my favorite garden markers a few weeks ago. I really fell in love with these from Twigg Studios and used her idea to create mine.
I originally thought I wanted chalkboard, but that didn't exactly work, so I used paint and paint pens and they still look like chalkboard to me. I used regular craft paint and hand painted the black strips.
Then I wrote my veggies and herbs on the dried black paint with a white paint pen. After everything was dry I sprayed three coats of waterproof polyurethane on the front and back of each marker. I tried writing on the black with chalk and then spraying poly, but the wetness just dissolved the chalk, so that was not the way to go.
I made some extras as we add to our garden. I will just have to write the name and spray the poly to finish them off as needed.
