Chalkboard Dresser Redo

Chalkboard Dresser from Too Much Time on My Hands

This little beauty was adrift in the depths of a local thrift store. It was only $9.99! I adore the curves, but I was a bit scared of that terrible shipping tape someone had used to hold the drawers in. Well, that tape was the toughest part of this whole redo! I went to town with the razor blade and goo gone and banished the tape residue forever!

I originally wanted to strip the drawers and do a 2 tone with wood and paint finish, but the finish DID NOT cooperate and refused to come off completely. So I went another direction. I whipped up some gray chalk paint for the base using my usual recipe. Then I used the Annie Sloan dark wax to create a roughed up finish.

Then I tried a new chalkboard paint recipe for the drawers. I used unfinished grout mixed with the paint and now my drawers are ready for witty messages!

I did love the fixtures that came with the dresser, but it was missing one, so I had to start from scratch and I will use the originals for a different project. I tried so many different options from Hobby Lobby, but decided on these and am happy with how it turned out!

This is in my bedroom and totally jives with my rustic headboard and window treatment.

I can hardly wait to see what sayings people give you. I would but might be a bit too racey for a young gal like yourself. I’ve been married for 44 1/2 years and had 4 kids. Uh might not be fit for this forum. lol I sure do love reading blogs, never know what will come across in a post. Good for you wanting to keep some spice going. never hurts to surprise the hubs. Happy Days

  2. What a great find! I love the finish! Too cute the little labels you gave it!

  3. Love it! I’m just starting to get brave with distressing chalk paint. Can you tell me more about your process with the Annie Sloan dark wax? I don’t think I’ve heard of that before, though I’ve made my own chalk paint with plaster of paris and used Johnson’s wax paste to cover.

    • I think you can use Johnson’s instead of Annie Sloan. With the AS I do the clear in a small patch and then dark on top of it.

  4. Very cool dresser. Love the finishes you gave it. Very nicely done. Love the knobs you chose. TFS. ana

  5. You did a really good job, innovation and thinking out of the box. I love it. I’d say to your man “Choose One” and put all the pretty undergarments in one drawer.

    Cheers

  6. Love this fabulous redo Kim! You saw a diamond at the thrift store for sure 🙂 I would love for you to share your redo with us at the Pretty Things party (live now) Hugs!
