Cereal Box Star Tutorial

Patriotic DIY Mantle using cereal boxes, scrap fabric, and free printables l Too Much Time on My Hands

I am still getting ready for the patriotic season! Last week I gathered up all of our old cereal boxes and made these super cute stars. It couldn't have been an easier and cheaper project. I love the idea of making some for the Christmas season as well.

I traced big and large stars onto my flattened cereal boxes. Using a ruler I drew lines connecting each corner. Then I used a small exacto knife to score each line. Then when you fold each line your star becomes 3D! Spray paint your favorite colors and you are ready to roll!

I used my small stars to embellish this scrap fabric wreath.I used small pins to attach the stars. If I decide to move this to my front door there can be no glue involved. The front porch takes a beating from the sun and I can't use hot glue or the poor wreath will turn into a melty gooey mess:) Really, I tried once and it wasn't pretty!

I used my large stars to create a little banner for my mantle. You could hang this along your fence during a picnic, or even across your buffet table.

I bought a little packet of patriotic colored twine at the craft store and that's what I used to string my stars after I punched little holes in the top of each one.

I gave the stars quite a few coats of paint on the front and back. The white ones especially were a bear to get covered. The creases kept showing through and I think i gave up after about 6 coats of paint!

I just LOVE being able to upcycle our junk. Our recycle bins are always overflowing and it makes me feel good when I use those items at craft materials! How do you use your junk in crafts and projects around your home?

Check out the other patriotic projects I have been working on!
