Burlap Owl Banner & Fabric Printing Tute

Have you all been printing on fabric yet?

Well, I have been experimenting  for a while now and wanted to share my recent project and a few tips.

I made this simple and rustic banner out of scrap burlap and fabric and some jute.

We will be using it for an upcoming owl themed baby shower.

We are going with a natural outdoorsey vibe and this should fit right in.

I printed off some owls to use in the banner as well.

A couple of things to note when printing on fabric:

{1} The tighter the weave of the fabric, the clearer the image will be. This is duck cloth and the image is super clear.

{2} Cut the fabric smaller than the paper so your printer will grab the paper easily. When my fabric was hanging over the edge, my printer REFUSED to feed the page.

{3} When you spray the adhesive (I use Elmer's) ONLY SPRAY ON THE BACK OF THE FABRIC.

One time, I sprayed both the paper and the fabric, and with the fabric a touch smaller than the paper the adhesive was exposed. I printed on a few sheets and then realized the adhesive was getting onto my printer rollers and they totally jammed. BROKEN! Seriously-that printer was put out to pasture and I was none too happy about it.

That spray adhesive is no joke, be really careful you don't expose any parts of your printer to it!

I found my images by doing a google search for "free owl silhouette image." I saved it and then opened it in Picasa so I could crop and print 4 to a page. I also cut my other pieces of fabric and burlap using that as a size guide.

I used a big plastic needle to thread the banner. I had to use my paper punch to make holes in my duck cloth/owl pieces. Also, be careful not to get too close to the edges of the burlap-it will unravel easily.

Has anyone else had any fabric printing mishaps? Any other good tips we should know?

  1. Pretty soon I won’t need to read any other blogs since I find so many incredible projects on yours. Love the burlap projects. I have to do anything to do with burlap by hand sewing as my sewing machine just hates it, jams up as soon as I start to sew. Not a happy crafter/sewer when that happens. I use iron on tapes and hand sewing when I have to put burlap with anything else. Ah well, I’m not in a hurry, like to take my time to do a good job.
I’ll be on your blog tonight for awhile going thru all the great projects I can start. Sure glad you’re here.
    Happy Days Kim
