Becoming a Better Teacher

I am an elementary school teacher at heart.

I think once you are a teacher, it is always in you, a part of who you are.

I taught for seven years before I had kids. I taught first and third grades and it was the perfect career for me. However, when I had my first baby, I knew I needed to take off for a few years while I raised my kids. I was so grateful to have the opportunity, but I definitely missed my kids, the laughter, and hugs I received every day. I always knew I would go back to teaching when my children hit school themselves. I wanted to make sure I stayed up to date on current practices and research and eventually came to the decision that I wanted to go back to school to earn my Masters Degree in Reading and Literacy. I knew having that degree in my hand would help me in the future when I went back to the education profession.

I needed to find a school and a program that had some flexibility because my husband worked 50 hours a week. I needed to be able to do my studying on my time. One day that would be from 1-3 pm while my daughter napped and the next day it would be after dinner when she was settled in for the night. For me an on-line program fit the bill. It was flexible, I could do my work anytime and anywhere and I would be acquiring vital skills to help me secure a great job in the future.

While I was in my Master's in Education program I got pregnant for a second time and had my son. That was when the flexibility was truly crucial. My professors were extremely understanding and knew just how to support me because they work with adults advancing and changing their professions every day. It took me almost three years to earn my degree, but I took my time and had the opportunity to earn my degree without over burdening my life or getting in the way of raising my family.

Kaplan University is a fantastic place to earn a Master's Degree, a Bachelors Degree, or take courses to advance your career. They have flexible start dates, different curriculum tracks to meet individual needs, and a large variety of degrees and certificates available to support your growing career.  Whether you are interested in Education, Nursing, Business, or IT, just to name a few, Kaplan University is a strong reputable choice.

Now, my son is getting ready to head into Kindergarten next fall and I am preparing my portfolio and getting geared up to look for a teaching job.  I am so much more confident knowing that I will walk into every interview armed with current knowledge and a degree. I know I will be a better teacher having gained crucial knowledge in my field while I was home with my kids over the past six years. I feel administrators will look favorably on my ambition to stay current in the education field even though it wasn't something I HAD to do it was something I chose to do.

Now I just need to figure out how to keep my blog going with a full time job and a full time family!
