How many of you can vividly remember running through your house singing "Tomorrow" and wishing you had Punjab as your own butler so he could do magic tricks for you all day? I even wished I had red curly hair! I was surprised to realize I hadn't even sat down with my own kids to watch one of my childhood favorites, Annie. But just in time to save the day, there is a new Annie coming out on Digital HD on March 10 and Blu-ray Combo Pack on March 17, 2015. We were lucky enough to have a prescreening in our cozy living room this past snowy weekend.
First of all, I was excited about the cast. Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Rose Byrne, and the ADORABLE new Annie herself, Quvenzhané Wallis. I was excited to watch some of my favorites step into these classic roles. My daughter is 7 and my son is 6, and they were excited about the modern feel right off the bat.
This is such a touching story with lots of lessons that opened up opportunities for meaningful discussions with my children. We had some heartfelt talks about foster kids and what it must be like to grow up without your parents. If you aren't familiar, Academy Award® nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who's also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they'd be back for her someday, it's been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). But everything's about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) - advised by his brilliant VP, Grace (Rose Byrne) and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy (Bobby Cannavale) - makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he's her guardian angel, but Annie's self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it's the other way around.
I love that the movie has the same message as my old favorite, but is presented in a modern way that my kids really responded to. Of course, Sandy, Annie's trusty pooch companion was one of their favorites as is probably the case for lots of kids. My favorite part was when they were in the movie theater. It was our first glimpse of the real man, Will, and we saw his personality and even some love. My son is super excited to clean our floors next weekend like the girls did in the "Hard Knock Life" scene. I am trying to explain that it will be a disaster, but he isn't convinced! My daughter loved the part when Miss Hannigan came clean to the girls and asked for their help to rescue Annie.
