3 New Birdhouses

We moved into this house in May 3 years ago. Our first week here we discovered a bird nest in our fireplace vent. We watched momma lay and nurture her eggs and oohed and ahhhed over the baby birds when they hatched.

We didn't remove the nest (I know probably a fire hazard) and every spring more eggs and more babies. Now, this event is pretty much the highlight of our spring.

I am not much for sappy, but last year, I was in the backyard gardening right under the nest and I knew there was only one little baby left. I heard momma bird squawking up a storm in a nearby tree and looked up just as the last baby took it's first "step." He made it to his momma in the tree and I was just really  moved to watch such a special and unique experience in nature.

Thinking about all that again this spring motivated me to grab a few bird houses and add them to our garden. Who knows, maybe we can lure a few more birds to nest in our backyard!

I started with 3 different birdhouses from JoAnn's.

I really didn't have much of a plan. I knew I wanted them to be very different and colorful to add some life to my yard.

My favorite is the one I mod podged with old newspaper looking scrap booking paper. Then I added a dice knob from hobby lobby! Of course I put about 5 coats of polyurethane over those pages...hope it holds up!

I also love #7! The metal number is also from Hobby Lobby.

The last one was pretty simple and then at the last minute I threw a rusty old spring around the top and now it is just perfect.

I was thinking about mounting them on some giant branches we hauled home from a hike last weekend, but for now they are sitting on top of another new garden addition.

But more about that tomorrow:)

These are the funkiest birdhouses I’ve ever seen, Kim! The faux-newspaper birdhouse looks awesome but I’m a lover of the number 7, too so I’m torn about which one is my favourite! I would be so sad to put such pretty birdhouses outside.
