I made these "FLY" letters last year for my son's bedroom.
I have had quite a few questions and comments about them, so I decided to make another set, give you a tutorial, and I am going to put them in my ETSY shop.
I grabbed all of my supplies:
1. Wood or Paper Mache Letters
2. Old Book
3. Mod Podge
4. Paint
5. Scissors
6. X-acto knife or super sharp cutting tool
7. Cutting Mat
8. Wood Stain
I spray painted the sides and edges of each letter red. Then I tore out enough pages to cover the front of each letter.
Next, I painted the front of each letter with Mod Podge and was careful to add more where the pages overlapped.
After all my pages were glued on, I applied a coat of Mod Podge over the top of each letter and let it dry.
Then I flipped each letter over onto my cutting pad and trimmed the excess paper with my fancy Fiskars x-acto knife.
I painted another coat of Mod Podge onto the front of each letter being sure to seal up the edges. After that dried I got to work mixing my Mod Podge with Minwax Wood Stain. Just a bit of the stain will tint the Mod Podge and give the finished piece a vintagey feel.
I only painted one coat on the letters, but it was thick!
All of that gloppy tinted Mod Podge left an interesting finish after drying over night.
The small amount of bright red really pops against the book pages, without being too overbearing.
I like the wrinkles and color variations in the book pages.
